J&K Sports Council is an organisation dedicated to foster and nurture sport in the state.
Created via a Govt. Order No.: 390 of 1959 dt: 10-08-1959, the Council met first on 5th Nov 1959 at the residence of the then Prime Minister of J&K Late Bakhshi Ghulam Mohammad at Srinagar. Its mantra back then as well as today is simply: A healthy mind can exist only in a healthy body. We are driven by the drive to ensure that healthy bodies have all that is required to ensure that the wealth of health is multiplied twice over each day. Headed directly by the Chief Minister, the Council has the advantage of being a direct conduit between the administration and the sportspeople. The council seeks to cater to the sports needs of youth – students or otherwise. Give a man a boat and he will ride; the council therefore particularly invests in creating and developing sports infrastructure in various parts of the State. This development is complimented by provision of sponsorship and specialised coaching to budding and emerging sportspersons. The council also performs a dual role of advisory and administrative body. On one hand it regulates the activities of recognised State Sports Associations funding their operations. On the other hand, it also advises the government in sports related matters, recommending and formulating policies for encouragement and nurturing of sport in the state. The council ensures that expert advice is sought and the feedback from concerned stakeholders corroborate to create sustainable policies. The council is also responsible for liaising with Govt. of India and Sports Authority of India in implementation of their programme’s/schemes in the State. The council also sets the criteria for the grant of sports category for admission in professional courses or any other category in employment.
The Organisation is headed by Hon’ble Chief Minister & Hon’ble Sports Minister as its President & Vice-President respectively. The members of the Sports Council are nominated by the Govt every four years. The Secretary, Joint Secretaries & Treasurer are elected amongst nominated members for a period of four years.
